Senior Satellite Operations Engineer – UK

About this role:

We are looking for a highly experienced, Satellite Operations Engineer to join our busy Engineering team, in a hybrid working role based in the UK to support a diverse range of activities to deliver on our projects and missions.

This opportunity is ideal for someone looking for responsibility and development opportunities by technically advising and driving the direction of satellite operations processes and tools for future constellations and leading commissioning phases for both new and exciting missions. You will have proven experience from regulated industries with the desire to grow your knowledge and expertise while adding value to our current ways of working.  You will not be afraid of challenges and happy to get involved! Given the nature of the role, there is some on-call and out-of-hours working involved. It is an exciting opportunity to be part of existing projects and missions where your work literally ends up in space!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architectural design and review of ground segment and automation definition
  • Ownership of satellite operations roadmap towards effective constellation management
  • Develop tools for constellation management
  • Provide guidance and technical expertise for satellite operations in line with compliance requirements
  • Ownership of satellite operations work packages in accordance with standards and compliance requirements
  • Drive the first weeks of our satellites’ lives through planning, preparation, and execution of the commissioning phases
  • Analyse data and investigate in-orbit anomalies, solving problems both individually and through collaboration with other engineering disciplines
  • Support the design of mission specific ground segment systems for service and data delivery
  • Develop documentation and processes in according to regulations and licence requirements

Skills required:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrates significant experience with satellite operations experience
  • Proven track record in flight dynamics experience
  • Deep understanding of satellites and the space industry, and up to date with advancements in the industry
  • Proven ability to effectively identify and debug issues with existing or new software
  • Technical report and procedure writing to a high standard
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as to effectively collaborate within cross cultural teams
  • Ability to make technical decisions with a systems mindset
  • Quick thinking with the ability to remain calm under pressure, for example during live satellite communication passes
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate work
  • Customer focused with commercial understanding
  • Competent IT skills including Microsoft Software and familiarity with command line interfaces
  • Proficient in English, both verbally and written

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of space mission analysis and satellite design
  • Experience working with ISL satellites
  • Experience of programming in Python
  • Experience of RF / DSP engineering applied to space communications
  • Experience with space mission regulatory environment (ITU filings, insurances…)
  • Experience of testing or operating a satellite at system/mission level
  • Experience with constellation management
  • Previous experience working with small/medium sized companies
