FPGA Firmware Engineer – Delft

We are looking for an FPGA Firmware Engineer with good insights in product development to join our Delft team in the Netherlands.

As we expand and improve our line of satellite sub-system capabilities at AAC Hyperion, we are looking for creative, driven, and enthusiastic FPGA engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and deploying our world-class satellite technology.

This opportunity is ideal for someone looking for responsibility and development opportunities of a technical nature in a dynamic, fast paced working environment with exciting projects and technical challenges. You will be expected to work on projects of different sizes and complexities, ranging from actuator control systems to optical communication devices.

You will be happy to get involved and learn from the project! We also support activities across the AAC Clyde Space group so there is plenty of opportunities for cross-site collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and coding of FPGA systems for space applications
  • Supporting Product lines such as laser communication and attitude control systems
  • Improve current designs and undertake design reviews with the rest of the team
  • Develop and maintain technical design documentation including requirements capture, technical descriptions, test plans, and user manuals
  • Generate test benches and perform functional testing to validate designs
  • Identify and estimate the tasks
  • Deliver the company’s projects allocated to budget, schedule, and quality constraints
  • Deliver work tasks and assignments in accordance to required standards and compliance requirements


Skills required:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent work experience
  • Previous experience working in regulated industry
  • Proven track record in industry with FPGA design including design lifecycle
  • Very good knowledge of VHDL (candidates with Verilog knowledge will be considered)
  • Knowledge of FPGA and System on Chip
  • Very good understanding of physical and timing constraints in synthesis and layout
  • Proficient as a C programmer with experience in developing embedded systems
  • Ability to liaise with stakeholders, suppliers and customers
  • Ability to work independently as well as to effectively collaborate within cross cultural teams
  • Ability to make good decisions under highly demanding, dynamic environment
  • Ability to organise self and prioritise workload in dynamic environment with tight deadlines
  • Competent IT skills including Microsoft software
  • Proficient in English, both verbally and written


Skills desired:

  • Experience in Aerospace and/or CubeSat sector
  • Understanding of FPGA design for harsh environments (thermal, radiation, vibration)
  • Experience with Lattice design tools
  • Proficiency in developing tools in Python to assist with the testing and deployment of embedded systems
  • Experience in working with other engineering fields like optics, mechanics, software
  • Previous experience working with small/medium sized companies
